The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…..a church…..a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for the day. We cannot change our past….we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is ATTITUDE….I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with all of us…..we are in charge of our attitudes.

The following is how former cult members and members of spiritually abusive
systems described how they felt when they finally left their group.It Hurts
It Hurts to discover you were deceived - that what you thought
was the "one true religion," the "path to total fredom," or "truth"
was in reality a cult.It Hurts when you learn that people you trusted implicitly - whom
you were taught not to question - were "pulling the wool over your
eyes" albeit unwittingly.It Hurts when you learn that those you were taught were your "enemies"
were telling the truth after all - but you had been told they were
liars, deceivers, repressive, satanic etc and not to listen to
them.It Hurts when you know your faith in God hasn't changed - only
your trust in an organization - yet you are accused of apostasy,
being a trouble maker, a "Judas". It hurts even more when it is
your family and friends making these accusations.It Hurts to realize their love and acceptance was conditional on
you remaining a member of good standing. This cuts so deeply you
try and suppress it. All you want to do is forget - but how can
you forget your family and friends?It Hurts to see the looks of hatred coming from the faces of those
you love - to hear the deafening silence when you try and talk
to them. It cuts deeply when you try and give your child a hug
and they stand like a statue, pretending you aren't there. It stabs
like a knife when you know your spouse looks upon you as demonised
and teaches your children to hate you.It Hurts to know you must start all over again. You feel you have
wasted so much time. You feel betrayed, disillusioned, suspicious
of everyone including family, friends and other former members.It Hurts when you find yourself feeling guilty or ashamed of what
you were - even about leaving them. You feel depressed, confused,
lonely. You find it difficult to make decisions. You don't know
what to do with yourself because you have so much time on your
hands now - yet you still feel guilty for spending time on recreation.It Hurts when you feel as though you have lost touch with reality.
You feel as though you are "floating" and wonder if you really
are better off and long for the security you had in the organization
and yet you know you cannot go back.It Hurts when you feel you are all alone - that no one seems to
understand what you are feeling. It hurts when you realize your
self confidence and self worth are almost non-existent.It Hurts when you have to front up to friends and family to hear
their "I told you so" whether that statement is verbal or not.
It makes you feel even more stupid than you already do - your confidence
and self worth plummet even further.It Hurts when you realize you gave up everything for the cult -
your education, career, finances, time and energy - and now have
to seek employment or restart your education. How do you explain
all those missing years?It Hurts because you know that even though you were deceived, you
are responsible for being taken in. All that wasted time ... at
least that is what it seems to you - wasted time.The Pain Of Grief
Leaving a cult is like experiencing the death of a close relative or
a broken relationship. The feeling is often described as like having
been betrayed by someone with whom you were in love. You feel you
were simply used.There is a grieving process to pass through. Whereas most people understand
that a person must grieve after a death etc, they find it difficult
to understand the same applies in this situation. There is no instant
cure for the grief, confusion and pain. Like all grieving periods,
time is the healer.Some feel guilty, or wrong about this grief. They shouldn't - It
IS normal. It is NOT wrong to feel confused, uncertain, disillusioned,
guilty, angry, untrusting - these are all part of the process.
In time the negative feelings will be replaced with clear thinking,
joy, peace, and trust.Yes - It hurts but the hurts will heal with time, patience & understanding.
There is life after the cult.

What is your worst fear?
by Scully ina recent death in my family triggered my worst fear - as irrational as it may sound - into a very real possibility.. let me explain: as a global culture, we simply accept that when someone dies, those who care about them will want to gather and offer a meaningful tribute to the person and those who survive them.
with regard to my recently deceased family member - her own children decided against holding a memorial service for her surviving family, which included two children and their respective spouses, eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
yes, we are spread out over 2000 miles.

Lately theres been a lot of discussion about what course the WTS will take with those who are trying to escape their control, and want to quietly fade away. Some have written some really excellent posts on the Art of Fading Away w/o getting df or da.
Some have even suggested that the WTS may even adopt a hard-line policy that even those who become inactive should be viewed the same way as those who are df or da.
They should also be shunned.
Lets explore this possibility using WT logic shall we:
First of all, we know that to become inactive you fail to report fs time for at least 6 months. Now chances are that if you havent turned in your time for 6 months, you probably arent going to many meetings, if any at all. The congregation secretary will give the info to your C.B.S.O. (cong.book study overseer) that your are now inactive
Arrangements might be made through him to try to assist you back from your spritual inactivity lest you die, however you give no indication that you wish to be helped.
That being the case, they will follow the new directive.
NEW DIRECTIVE FROM THE SOCIETY:
If any brother or sister has become inactive for any reason other than there on their death-bed. The following action should be taken.
Their name should be read from the platform as INACTIVE and should no longer be viewed as one of JW.
Justification for such action is as follows:
1). If they have become inactive and have not attended meetings for 6 months or more you know full well that these individuals have become involved in all sorts of unscriptural activities such as the following
Manslaughter.
A degree of guilt could result from careless driving, care-
less maintenance of one's automobile, or other careless or
thoughtless action that causes injury or death. (Compare
Deuteronomy 22:8. )Being a professional boxer may be viewed in a similar
way. (w817/1 pp. 30-1)Sexual misconduct, including; adultery, fornication, and other forms of "por.ne'a.."
Uncleanness includes an intentional momentary touching
of sexual parts or caressing of breasts. ( I Thess. 4:7, 8;
1 Tim. 5:1,2)Loose conduct is a shocking, flagrant disregard for Jeho-
vah's moral standards. (Gal. 5:19; w83 3/15 p. 31; w73
9/15 pp. 574-6)It may include the willful practice of heavy petting or
the fondling of breasts.The nature, circumstances, and actual extent of what
has occurred may indicate loose conduct, which would
require judicial action.Such practices can easily lead to por.neia.
"Por.neia" involves immoral use of the genitals of at least
one human ( whether in a natural or a perverted way ), and
there must have been another party to the immoralitya
human of either sex or a beast; willing participation incurs
guilt and requires judicial action. It is not a casual touch-
ing of the sex organs between persons but involves the

The Leader(s)
(This is the only one NOT likely to be found in the local congregation, at least not for long. This attitude is reserved for presidents only!) On a mission from God, this one has had the urge for leadership and control in his mind from an early age, but it took many years to figure out how to adopt the greater persona and ego necessary to accompany such drive. This superior ego humbles the old self, which can now be deprecated as the "old man" (without mussing the new ego). He has been humbled by God, and now very much desires the greater persona and ego that has been shown to him. His major struggle now is to learn to step aside and let "God" (via the greater persona) speak through him; a struggle that will also take a toll on his followers, as they struggle to purge any vestiges of doubt and critical thinking that remains, so that they, too, can be part of this mission from God.
The Loyal Subject
These are driven by the desire for the approval of others, and in some cases they possess the joy of giving. They love receiving orders, and the carrying out of those orders is one of their greatest joys in life. They have no desire to make their own decisions, so they gladly accept the conscience of others in the organization in exchange for their approval.
The Lazy orDimwitted Witness
Forgetful, untrustworthy and often clueless, this one serves a dual purpose in the congregation. First, they make all the rest look more evolved on the social scale, and can thus be abused without remorse. These ironically do the bulk of the work, in terms of quantity (hours) but not quality (Duh! I placed two magazines!)
The YoungWhippersnapper
Whether they were groomed for power or snort it like drugs, some young men will always "reach out for the office of [the] overseer," and when they get to his door, will painstakingly emulate all his actions until the elder(s) get so sick of seeing this twisted mime of themselves that they appoint them to eldership.
Sister Special Pioneer
She possesses the dual advantage of not being taken too seriously by the congregation (because of being a woman) and therefore is not subject to close scrutiny, while intimidating others with her knowledge as well as her style of being rather "up-front" at times. Elders rarely mess with her.
Typical Elder
Elders are either power moguls or reluctant father-images. Either type rarely crosses over, as their roles are very distinct: One creates the messes and the other cleans up. Overworked, usually spends years trying to get there at the cost of his wife and children. Jim Beam may be his best friend in the end.
Old Timer
These never quite got scared enough from the start, so never fully march to the whole program. They resemble Toto, who wants to see whats behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz. Often raised in the organization, these are usually very perceptive and wise. They know to keep mostly submerged in times of trouble, then miraculously become buoyant when politically advantageous. Like cats, they watch the show but are too smart to run it, preferring to mock it from afar. They are not afraid of Jehovah, the devil, or the Circuit Overseer, but can be controlled only through blackmail.
Trouble
Yes, its their first, middle and last name. This type thrives well in a legalistic atmosphere due to getting constant attention and reinforcing the concept of what NOT to be. The only greater joy these types treasure is the opportunity to make one of the "self-righteous" ones in the congregation look bad. That way they get to feel self-righteous for a change themselves, AND receive attention for the heresy hunt they started! This "drug" is only temporary and soon wears off, and they are paid even less attention afterwards, driving them to search for more victims.
Temporary Sojourner
A breath of fresh air coming in, at least until the JWs realize that they may not sell out everything to join. Ultimately branded as selfish and rebellious, not so much for style variation as for retaining common sense. They were "never REALLY" Witnesses.
Apostate
Short-lived, quickly disposed of. Not much is known about this breed, except they are worms, leeches, spiritual fornicators, mentally diseased, insane, probably eat small children, etc.

According to WT jargon:
The word apostasy comes from a Greek term that means a standing away from, a falling away, defection, rebellion, abandonment.
CAUSES and EFFECTS of APOSTASY
If we analyze these warnings given by WTS, the following identifying features of typical apostates emerge:
CAUSES:
(1) Deviation from the truth
(2) Twisted, empty speech
(3) Efforts to subvert the faith of some and draw away disciples after themselves
(4) Hypocrisy (wolves in sheeps covering)
(5) Recognizable by their fruits; they advance to more and more ungodliness
(6) Destructive doubts
(7) Ingratitude and presumptuousness
EFFECTS:
(1) Loss of joy
(2) Hardened in your rebellious ways
(3) Despising theocratic order
(4) Falling into loose conduct & fornication
(5) Abandoning the straight path
(6) Staining the inner garment
Such telltale signs were meant to enable dubs to quickly identify apostates and to be on guard against them.
